Driving Overseas
Driving overseas if often a necessity for some travelers and so it is important that the right steps are taken to ensure that driving overseas is safe and hassle free. Drivers must be prepared for the instance where a police officer asks to see documentation, if unable to be presented; drivers could face fines or even vehicle confiscation. Obviously, a drivers license or paper counterpart must be presented, however, sometimes it might be required to have an International Drivers Permit, as well as a passport and proof of vehicle insurance; it may also be the case that a visa for that particular country be presented also.
Most drivers overseas choose to rent cars for the duration of their stay; others may borrow or lease cars. If hiring is the case, then drivers must firstly make sure that they are over the minimum age for driving, as this may vary in countries. Once a car is hired they must keep hold of the Vehicle on Hire certificate.
Some drivers may have difficulty driving overseas if the host country drives on the other side of the road, in which case it is a good idea for the driver to familiarise themselves with the car and the roads before setting out, and to avoid city centres and busy areas until more comfortable with the driving environment. To be safe, lock doors of a night time, and do not use mobile phones whilst driving, it might not be illegal in the host country, but it is still considered dangerous to use one.
